Hydropower is the most important form of renewable electricity production in Finland. Kemijoki Oy produces close to a third of Finland’s hydropower. Hydropower helps to secure Finland’s energy supply in the age of renewable energy sources.
When all of Finland wakes up in the morning, there is a spike in energy consumption: we make coffee, do our morning routines, and open our laptops. Kemijoki Oy produces renewable and emission-free hydropower in Finland to ensure availability of electricity. We increase production when consumption is at its highest and reduce it when Finland is sleeping. We also supplement other forms of energy production: solar power on cloudy days, and wind power when the weather is still.
In addition to hydropower production, our operations include a lot of other things as well: we protect and landscape dozens of kilometres of riverbanks annually, and plant millions of fish. Hydropower production can be felt and seen at the river. Therefore, close relations with other users of the river, such as the fishing areas and riverside residents, is important to us. Our operations also cover a large geographical area.
We own 20 hydropower plants, 16 of which are located at the Kemijoki area, two at River Lieksanjoki, and two at River Kymijoki
The hydropower plants located at the Kemijoki catchment area are mostly situated by the Kemijoki and Kitinen rivers. Therefore, it is natural that the largest power plants by water quantity are located in the lower reaches of the Kemijoki river’s main channel, below Rovaniemi. The seven power plants of the Kemijoki main channel are among the 10 largest hydropower plants in Finland.
