Ailangantunturi Pumped Storage Project Moves Forward in the Permitting Process

The information submitted by Kemijoki Oy supplements the water permit application with further details on affected parties and compensation within the project’s area of influence, as well as on the planned structures and construction activities, including dams and dredging works. In addition, the information provides more detailed plans for environmental and water quality monitoring.

“The permitting process has progressed according to plan. At this stage, the supplementary information provides greater clarity on the management of construction-related impacts and risks, while ensuring that the authorities have access to the most comprehensive information possible when assessing the project’s impacts as part of the permitting process,” says Petri Vihavainen, Project Director.

The Ailangantunturi pumped storage power plant, planned for Kemijärvi, is one of Finland’s largest energy storage projects. If implemented, the facility will strengthen the flexibility of the electricity system, support the integration of renewable energy and improve security of supply. The European Commission has granted the project PCI (Project of Common Interest) status in recognition of its importance to Europe’s energy security, self-sufficiency and clean transition objectives.
